“There once was a time. Before television. Before motion pictures… The greatest part of human existence was spent in such a time. And then, over the dying embers of the campfire, on a moonless night, we watched the stars.” – Carl Sagan
Richmond Orchestra’s summer concert celebrates our relationship with, and fascination for, the world that lies beyond our own sky: from our affection for our nearest neighbour the moon, as evoked by Debussy and Frank Bridge, to imagining what life among the stars might be like in films such as 2001 and the Star Trek series. Central to the concert is Holst’s mighty suite The Planets. The mystically-inclined composer’s interest in the astrological characters of the worlds among which we spin produced led to his masterpiece, one of the greatest works in all of English music. We are delighted to be joined again by the outstanding young singers of Waldegrave School for a concert not to be missed.
